Math/ICES Center of Numerical Analysis Seminar: Finite element spaces, new and old by Douglas Arnold (University of Minnesota) in ACE 4.304
In the long history of finite element methods, many finite element spaces have been developed, mplemented, and studied. Their construction and properties often bring a mix of elementary geometry, algebra, and functional analysis, together with a variety of ingenuous tricks. Viewed from the perspective of exterior calculus, many of these spaces, which previously seemed quite distinct, can be treated uniformly and naturally. This modern viewpoint has led to some some significant elements which were previously undiscovered, and--even for some of the long known elements--provides improvements, new properties, and insights.
