  • Recognition of Faculty and Graduate Students
    The Department of Mathematics is pleased to announce the recipients of the Frank Gerth III Teaching Excellence Awards and the Department of Mathematics Outstanding Teaching Awards for 2007-2008. Heather Van Ligten and Diane Radin are the recipients of Department of Mathematics Outstanding Teaching Award. Herivelto Borges Filho, Kris Clabes, Eric Staron, Brandy Guntel and Pippa Charters are the recipients of Frank Gerth III Teaching Excellence Award. Allison Bishop, Jin Hyuk Choi Yuan Yao and Kyudong Choi are the recipients of Frank Gerth III Graduate Excellence Award. Ricado Alonso, Magda Czubak, Alex Kahle, Mark Luxton and Andrea Young are the recipients of Frank Gerth III Dissertation Awards.
  • Mathematics New Faculty
    The Department of Mathematics would like to welcome all of our new faculty and students. Thirteen new faculty members, Jane Arledge, Clayton Bjorland, Gerard Brunick, Chi Han Chan, Thomas Chen, David Fithian, John Hammond, Florent Jouve, Hector Lomeli, Brett Milburn, Hossein Namazi, Kui Ren and Stephanie Somersille have joined the department this fall.
  • Hausel -- Whitehead Prize for 2008
    Prof. Tamas Hausel has just been recognized by receiving a Whitehead Prize for 2008. The citation reads "for his investigations into hyperkähler geometry which have led him to prove deep results in fields as diverse as the representation theory of quivers, mirror symmetry and Yang-Mills instantons."
  • Dr J. Rath has been chosen as the AMS Congressional Fellow for 08-09
    The American Mathematical Society (AMS) has chosen James Rath as the AMS Congressional Fellow for 2008-09. This Fellowship program is administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). It provides a unique public policy learning experience, to demonstrate the value of science-government interaction, and to bring a technical background and external perspective to the decision-making process in Congress.
  • Spring 08 Awards
    Graduating Ph.D students R. Alonso, M. Czubak, A. Kahle, M. Luxton and A. Young won this years Frank Gerth III dissertation Awards. Graduating Math undergraduates A. Ahmed, N. Ehrmann, Pui Man Ho and A. Leroux have been awarded 2008 Williams Scholars. D. Radin won CNS teaching excellence award and M. Zou won CNS staff excellence award.
  • Pavlovic has been awarded a Sloan Fellowship
    Professor Natasa Pavlovic has been awarded a 2008 Sloan Fellowship. Natasa has joined our department from Princeton in fall 2007. She received her Ph. D. from University of Illinois at Chicago in 2002. Her research areas includes PDE and Harmonic Analysis.
  • James Vick Receives the Nowotny Medal
    Professor James W. Vick of Mathematics and Sharon H. Justice of Department of Educational Administration have been awarded the Arno Nowotny Medal. Dr. Vick and the recipients of the Presidential Citation, Civitatis Award,the President’s Associates and Chancellor’s Council Teaching Awards have been honored at the University award dinner on Jan. 23.
  • UT-Austin/Portugal Collaboration
    The Department of Mathematics is participating a program of collaboration with several Portuguese Universities. This program includes teaching graduate students, postdocs and research collaboration. This collaboration is part of the International Collaboratory for Emerging Technology (Colab), which encompasses, Mathematics as well as Digital Media, Advanced Computing and Tecnology Innovation.

Shinko Harper and Jason Callahan are the recipients of Outstanding Teaching Awards. Emanuel Carneiro, Paul Fili, Alisa Havens, Joseph Hunt and Phil Monin receive this year's Frank Gerth III Teaching Excellence Awards. Nestor Guillen, Phil Monin and Chia-Liang Sun receive Frank Gerth III Graduate Excellence Awards. Elaine Cozzi, Jeremy Van Horn-Morris and Jason Deblois receive Frank Gerth III Dissertation Awards.
  • Mathematics New Faculty
    The Department of Mathematics would like to welcome all of our new faculty and students. Eighteen new faculty members, Thomas Chen, Yingda Cheng, Geir Helleloid, David Helm, Eric Katz, Sanghyun Kim, Hun Kwon, Jennifer Mann, Natasa Pavlovic, Pamela Powell, James Rath, Alro Schurle, Henry Segerman, Mihai Sirbu, Elizabeth Stepp, Nicolay Tanushev, Gloria White and Benuto Zheng have joined the department this fall.
  • Salerno Receives AMS-AAAS Mass Media Fellowship
    Adriana Salerno, a Ph.D. student in mathematics, has been awarded the AMS-AAAS Mass Media Fellowship for 2007. She will work at Voice of America for 10 weeks this summer under the sponsorship of the AMS.
