Moving to apache2 isn't just about speed.  Apache 1 is no longer being 
actively developed and new features will only be showing up in Apache 2. 
Apache 2 also cleans up a number of apache 1's dirty corners and is more 
cleanly put together.  But if you're stuck focued on speed consider:

So in general apache 2 is somewhat faster than apache 1.  Whether that 
applies to mod_perl or not I'm not sure.  I checked around and couldn't 
find an answer.  The question would be much more appropriate for the 
mod_perl list though.
