Hi, I am trying to get reminders to work but so far
without much success. I am able to send mail (mutt,
mail, etc) from the webcalendar server but mail queued
by webcal does not reach it's destination. I do have
wcald running. What have I missed?

Hi, I am trying to setup a corporate calendar on

taken directly to the corporate calendar without
having to login. The corporate calendar is a moderated

How can I accomplish this?

Anonymous login, done via the command line. Here's the one I use.
http://www.harrisonhills.org/cgi-bin/wcal/wcal.pl?anonymous=true&calendar=hh
bc&elink=detail&calendarselection=false
This logs in as anonymous, selects the calendar 'hhbc' (I have two
calendars), has detailed icons, and doesn't show the calendar drop-down list
(again, I have two calendars, but hhbc is dependent on the 2nd)

Subject: [Webcalendar] WebCal installation frustations
Message-ID: <43285097.4070702 a t mail.eldo.k12.mo.us>
I looked at the web cal demo a year or so ago and decided it would be
perfect for our K-12 school.
I've worked at trying to install it, off and on, ever since and now I've
confused myself so much I seem to be overlooking minor things.
I'm trying to implement it on a new SUSE (novell) box.
Here is what I've done.
1. Downloaded the tar and unzipped it to the /srv/www/ directory
2. Started editing the install.pl file
I don't understand how to configure this file.
Does the install create some of the directories such as webcal or
wcal (I'm comparing with the redhat 7.2 install.pl) or do I need to
rename the extracted webcal2.x.x directory to whatever I put here.
Do the .pl files need to be put into the cgi dir of /srv/www/ or do
they stay in the webcal2.x.x directory?
I also see the install.pl default looking for wcal.pl in the command
$CGINAME="$CGIDIR/wcal.pl but I don't see that file in my directory, I
see webcal.pl
Do I need to make those changes also?
I'm really frustrated because this kind of thing usually doesn't stump
me but I'm a newbie in this area. Any help would be appreciated.

I have experienced similar problems trying to install web cal onto our
Fedora server. I have temporarily installed it on the only windows PC on
our network. I really would like to set it up on our server. I have 2
other sites already running on our web server so I have some experience,
but I am in no way an expert in this area. I have just run out of ideas
on what to do next. I am hoping I might be able get some help from our
local linux user group.

That is wrong. You should unpack it into your home directory or some
other convenient place.
The /srv/www directory is what you are going to install to.

You have to edit the install.pl file to reflect the place where it is
going to be, something like /srv/www/htdocs/webcal
> Do the .pl files need to be put into the cgi dir of /srv/www/ or do

The install.pl will copy everything to where it is supposed to be when
you run it.

I agree the whole installation process is a bit unusual, but it is quite
simple.
Once you have completed it, you will ask yourself how it could be so
difficult to understand.

That would be true if the installer worked 100% of the time, but there are often settings in there
that are not immediately apparent that need to be tweaked. Plus, not to mention that the docs are
only valid for Apache (1), and need the mods I described in an earlier email to work with Apache2.

Hi Brent,
Just as Rob Janssen said, you don't want to unpack the webcal download
file into the directory where you ultimately want webcal to run.
Instead, unpack it to a temporary directory, then edit install.pl; when
you run the installer (perl install.pl) it will put things where they
belong.
When you edit install.pl, the first variable you see will be $CGIDIR --
this you should set to the directory from which you want webcal to run.
Note also, some of the following variables (including $SIGNUPCGINAME and
$IMAGEDIR) must be changed so their paths agree with what you specified
in $CGIDIR.

I agree that there sometimes are subtle things that could go wrong. I
am a longtime user (and it has been long since I last installed it), but
when reading the mail on this list it is clear to me that the single
error that is made by most of the beginners is to unpack the
distribution in the webserver directory and trying to get the resulting
file tree working.
This is not the correct approach. The downloaded file must be unpacked
somewhere else, the install.pl and webcalconfig.pm adapted to local
situation, and then the install.pl must be run.
It will make some changes to the files while copying them to the
specified location, and those are essential.
At first it can be overwhelming (less for me because there was less to
configure in the first versions and I have moved on with an ever more
complex webcal).
For SuSE you could start by doing this:
- change all /usr/local/apache to /srv/www in the install.pl
- change the server name from localhost to what it is
- change the username from nobody to wwwrun
now run it: perl install.pl
Then see what you have got under /srv/www and if it seems reasonable.
(when there already is a lot of website there be a bit careful, i.e.
backup that directory first)
Make the apache config changes and see if it works.
When you need to make changes, edit the install.pl and/or
webcalConfig.pm in the unpack directory (I keep it in my homedir) and
install again.
Re-installing will not erase the calendar data.
Rob
