Caffarelli Wins Israel's Wolf Prize

Luis Caffarelli has been named a winner of Israel's prestigious Wolf Prize, along with seven other American, British and Isreli recipients. The Math Department now has two Wolf prize winners on its faculty, John Tate won the Wolf prize in 2002. Read more ...
Engquist Receives 2012 AMS-SIAM Birkhoff Prize

Bjorn Engquist has been awarded the 2012 AMS-SIAM George David Birkhoff Prize in Applied Mathematics, "for his contributions to a wide range of powerful computational methods over more than three decades," the prize citation says. "His work blends mathematical analysis, modeling, and computation, and has led to numerical tools with enormous impact across a broad range of applications, including aerodynamics, acoustics, electromagnetism, computational fluid mechanics, and computational geoscience." Babuska Receives 2012 AMS Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement

Ivo M. Babuska has been awarded the 2012 AMS Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement, "for his many pioneering advances in the numerical solution of partial differential equations over the last half century." The prize citation goes on to say: "In his work on finite element methods, Babuska has developed and applied mathematics in profound ways to develop, analyze, and validate algorithms which are crucial for computational science and engineering. In so doing, he has helped to define that field, and has had a great impact on the modern world. A constant characteristic of Babuska's work is the combination of deep and imaginative mathematical analysis with a constant concern for the practical implications of his work for engineering applications." Engquist receives Hernici Prize

Professor Bill Guy Jr. Passed Away

Our distinguished colleague, Dr. Bill Guy, Jr. passed away on May 22 at his home in Austin. Dr Guy was a dearly beloved professor on campus who contributed much to our University, our College and especially our Department.

Our student, Eileen Martin, has been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship, the premier undergraduate award of its type in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. Eileen is being recognized for her work extending methods and theorems in frame theory to the study of differential topology.

Rodin and Sofer Wins CNS Outreach Innovation Award
Altha Rodin and Adriana Sofer have been awarded the 2011 College of Natural Sciences Outreach Innovation Award for their achievement and effort in establishing the Mathematics Teachers' Circle of Austin, a professional learning community that brings together middle school math teachers and professional mathematicians so that they may work together and learn from each other.
Margaret Combs Retires

After 27 years of dedicated service to the department, Margaret Combs retires from UT Austin. A reception was held on Feb 25, 2010 honoring her exceptional service to the University.
Margaret has won this year's UT Austin Outstanding Staff award. She is also a recipient of the inaugural Mathematics department staff excellence award.

City of Austin won WTS Award
March 24, 2010
The City of Austin recently won WTS International's Innovative Project
Solutions Award for its piloting of experimental bicycle facilities. The
pilot study, led by UT researchers Randy Machemehl and Jennifer Duthie,
has shown shared road pavement markings
reduces motorist-bicyclist conflicts.

Simons Postdoctoral Fellowship at UT Math

For Fall 2010 the Department of Mathematics will offer one 3-year postdoctoral fellowship supported by the Simons Foundation. This position carries a stipend of $70,000 plus travel, et al for three years with a requirement to teach three classes, including one at graduate level. The main constraint is that the successful candidate should have received their Ph.D. within 12 months proceeding his/her appointment.

Professor Mike Starbird and James Vick won Regents' Outstanding Teaching Awards. Professor Natasa Pavlovic won the first John R. Durbin Teaching Excellence Award in Mathematics. Zachary Miner won Math Dept Outstanding Teaching Award. John Meth, Allison Moore and Rory Rother won Frank Gerth III Teaching Excellence Awards. Hector Chang, Keenan Kidwell and Travis Mandel won Frank Gerth III Graduate Excellence Awards.

Professor Irene Gamba Receives NSF awards

Professor Irene M. Gamba, together with chemical engineering Professor Charles Mullins and chemistry Professor Allen Bard have received about $2.5 million grants to identify new materials that will efficiently absorb sunlight and split water into clean hydrogen fuel, which could power cars and be used to generate electricity.
