The reference manual has been translated into Brazilian and
European Portuguese, largely due to the efforts of Jorge Barros de Abreu.

You can access the reference manual in Maxima if the
locale is set to pt or pt_BR. There are also UTF8 encodings.
I don't remember exactly how to set the environment variables,
maybe someone can tell us that.

At present there is no way to change the messages printed
by Maxima e.g. translating error messages from English
to something else. It's a good idea and we've talked about it
before, but we haven't done it yet.
