I guess I'm with Harald on this one. I'm not entirely happy with
the current situation; it's a bit of a mess. But I'm not unhappy
enough to want to change it. I can see reasons for wanting
different behaviors of map in different contexts, and controlling
that behavior via global variables seems like an acceptable
solution.
