Course Outline: We will cover most of Chapters 1-7 and 10, in order. Tentatively, we cover chapters and sections:

Computer Accounts: A computer account on the Mathematics Department network can be obtained in the Undergraduate Computer Lab, RLM 7.122.

Attendance: Attendance is required at all class meetings.

Homework: Homework will be assigned regularly, with only a portion to be handed in for grading. It is acceptable for groups of students to help each other with the homework exercises; however, each student must write up his or her own work. Late homework will not be accepted for credit.

Quizes: Short quizes will be given randomly throughout the semester, in either lecture or recitation meetings. No make-ups are allowed for quizes.

Exams: Three exams will be given during the semester on Thursdays: September 24, October 22, and November 19. A comprehensive final exam will be given during finals week (Saturday, December 12, 2:00-5:00 pm).

Final Grade: The final exam will be scaled to count 40 points. Grades on the three midterm exams will count 20 points each. The homework and quizes will count 20 points. The final grade, using the plus/minus system, will be determined out of 100 points by dropping the lowest midterm test grade, or by weighting the final exam grade by 1/2 (i.e., by counting it as 20 points). Note that the homework and quiz score will count in the final grade.

University of Texas Honor Code: The core values of The University of Texas at Austin are learning, discovery, freedom, leadership, individual opportunity, and responsibility. Each member of the university is expected to uphold these values through integrity, honesty, trust, fairness, and respect toward peers and community.

Documented Disability Statement: The University of Texas at Austin provides upon request appropriate academic accommodations for qualified students with disabilities. For more information, contact Services for Students with Disabilities at 471-6259 (voice) or 232-2937 (video phone).

Addendum: In determining the homework and quiz scores, the lowest quiz and two lowest homework scores will be dropped.
